Spring means it’s time to plant things. Fix up the yard. Finally put something in that empty pot in the front yard. I'm an amateur gardener at this point in my life. I have a small space in the yard with a few veggies sprouting up. There's an arch entryway with morning star jasmine trailing up the side. While I still plant things that don't survive and put things in the wrong place in my yard, for the most part I'm finally successful at keeping more things alive than not. But, I had to start somewhere. Years ago, when I planted my first real plant, my grandmother was the first one I called for advice. She's a green thumb if there ever was one and an expert when it comes to spring gardening. You'll never guess what she told me… The first thing she started talking to me about was soil. For anything to grow, the soil has to be good and broken. And all of the sudden, I understood why our brokenness is the best thing that could ever happen to us. In Matthew 13, Jesus shared a parable about seeds. Some feel on hard soil and were scattered. Others fell among thorns and were choked out. A few were planted but didn’t sprout roots so they withered away. However, verse 23 says... The seed that fell on good, broken soil produced the harvest. It not only grew, it multiplied! When things come into our lives and break us apart, stir things up, they’re actually preparing us to grow. They’re making our lives fertile soil to allow God to plant something deep into our hearts so that we grow and produce good fruit. If you're like me you've come across this quote at least 100 times on the internet... And, there's so much truth in it. We have to cheer for each other. When we plant seeds of life into others souls and our own situations, life begins to grow. Brokenness hurts. We don’t understand it most of the time. It’s hard to trust that God is up to something good when this seems bad. However, if we’ll encourage each to allow the hard times to make our hearts soft, our brokenness will become good soil that sprouts the inspiration to do something awesome with our lives. **This is based off a devotional in “As You Wander.” Start your 100 days of discovering God journey on Amazon or by clicking HERE.
