King Solomon is famously quoted for saying “there’s nothing new under the sun” in Ecclesiastes 1:9. And he’s right, isn’t he? History does always seem to repeat itself, every thing builds upon something preexisting, and even the most creative ideas are birthed out of a previous thought or teaching.
If there’s nothing new, why should we walk into a new year any differently? Can we expect 2025 to hold anything original? Will God actually do something fresh for us?
While there may be nothing new under the sun, Solomon didn’t say there wasn’t anything new from heaven. And God promises us anything other than some old hat tricks when He commands his people in Isaiah 43:18-19, “Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.”
While we may not be able to technically do something new in 2025, God can. And He expects for us to look for Him to move unexpectedly. Our pastor focused on this verse this past Sunday in church. I’d had my mind already pondering on these thoughts before I walked into the sanctuary on Sunday. So, when he started preaching and used Isaiah 43:18-19, I knew to listen up. God had set this on my heart and here was my pastor reading my mail. He titled the message “New Thing, Different Way” and challenged us to anticipate that God will do things differently in 2025 because what we expect we experience. If we want to see God move in miraculous ways, we have to look for him to move afresh. Piggybacking off my sermon notes, here’s what God connected for me… for us… Only God can create something new. We are co-creators, we work along side what the creator has already accomplished. So, if we want something “new” we have to allow heaven to replace what is earthly and old. A restored marriage. A change in purpose or direction. Revival in our nation. A soft heart and fresh outlook. Reconciliation in a relationship. Restored finances. An open door. Healing of the body or mind. A way when there is no way. Anything new at all… Only God can bring it about a “new thing.” If we strive this year to start something new in our own power, it will be in vain. We must “perceive” God. “There is nothing new under the sun” but there is “new creation” in the Son. Choose our focus wisely. If we’ll look to heaven, we will see the Creator in heaven break ground on earth.
Think about it:
What new thing(s) are you expectant for God to do in 2025? How can you ensure you don’t strive for this out of your own power?
Our prayer:
Lord, We’ve made it to 2025 and we count that as a gift. We are not here by chance and we take this moment to realize that, just by existing, you are already something new. We are a new thing! And we need you to move afresh for us this year. We expect You to show up and do things only You can do. Will you do the impossible for your glory and our good? Our hopes are set on heaven as we look for your kingdom to come here on earth. In Jesus name we pray, Amen
