When the Seasons Change: Trusting God With What’s Next

There’s something about the first cool breeze in September cutting through the southern humidity that always makes me pause. The long days by the water and slow summer sunsets fade, and suddenly, school drop-offs, pumpkin candles, and packed schedules take their place.

It’s a change I can feel — not just in the air, but in my soul.

Change, even when expected, can feel unsettling.

This was the summer we moved to the lake. Our first weekend in the new house landed on Memorial Day. We knew the move was coming. We shifted the girls’ schools, found a new church, and expanded our community. We planned for it — yet it was still hard. There are always growing pains with change.

Maybe your life is shifting too — a new school year, a new job, a relationship evolving, or simply stepping into the last quarter of the year wondering, Where did the time go? Is it fall already?

The truth is, seasons change — in nature, yes, but also in our souls.
When Life Feels Unsteady

Let’s just be honest: we all crave stability. It’s comforting to know what’s coming next. If life looked the same every day, we could build predictable routines, stay in control, and coast on autopilot.

But God hasn’t called us to sleepwalk through life.

He invites us into a bigger story — one where we live fully awake and pay attention to what He’s doing. He is wild and untamable, capable of shifting everything for our good and His glory.

“There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens.”
— Ecclesiastes 3:1

Our seasons, both in nature and in life, have purpose. God calls us to trust Him even when we can’t see what’s ahead. And while transitions can feel uncomfortable, they’re often where He does His deepest work.

A Personal Story

Several years ago, my husband and I sensed that our family’s season in ministry was shifting. The air felt different around our work at church. So when an opportunity came for my husband to take a new job across the country, we prayerfully explored it.

Everything lined up perfectly. We sold our house, enrolled the kids in new schools, and started preparing to move.

But on the way back from one of our trips, we both — separately — felt God tugging at our hearts. A quiet but clear nudge: This isn’t the next season for you.

So we declined the offer.

It felt confusing at the time, but now I see His wisdom all over it.

We moved back into our city and spent the next few months living out of our RV. We took over a nonprofit, launched our own businesses, and — without knowing it — stepped into a brand-new chapter. God had to pull us far enough out of our comfort zone so we could see our situation, and our calling, through a fresh lens.

Looking back, I wouldn’t trade it for anything. Here’s what I learned from that season...

3 Ways to Trust God in Times of Change

1. Pause and Pray
Before reacting to change, bring it to God first. Instead of only praying for my circumstances to shift, I’ve started asking: “Lord, help me see what You’re doing here.”
When we view our seasons through spiritual eyes, we begin to see them differently.

Scriptures to reflect on:
John 8:1–11, James 1:19, Romans 8:1–2

2. Release What’s Behind
Just like you wouldn’t wear a bikini on a crisp fall morning, you can’t step into a new season while clinging to the last one.

As we move into fall, ask yourself:
“What am I holding onto that’s keeping me from stepping into what’s next?”

Scriptures to reflect on:
Isaiah 26:3, Philippians 3:13–14, Proverbs 3:5–6

3. Look for God’s Provision
Pay attention to the small ways He shows up:
  • An answered prayer
  • Unexpected help
  • A quiet peace you can’t explain
Even when you don’t know the next step, you can follow His presence and His promises into the season ahead.

Scriptures to reflect on:
Psalm 37:5, Philippians 4:19, Psalm 34:10

Stepping Into What’s Next
As September begins, I sense God nudging me to slow down — to release the expectations I’ve been holding onto and create space for Him to move. It isn’t easy for me. My natural tendency is to run ahead at full speed.

But when I pause long enough to notice, I can see His fingerprints all over this season.
Maybe you’ve started spotting the subtle shifts too — a leaf falling, cooler mornings, flavors changing from bright summer fruits to warm autumn spices.

In life and in nature, we often notice the change only when we slow down long enough to look.

So today, pause. Breathe. Pray. Release what’s behind you. And set your eyes on the season God is unfolding right in front of you.
