Popping up everywhere online are negative reactions to the Sydney Sweeney ad for sports prediction app (gambling) Novig. You’ve seen enough about it so let’s just cut to the chase– Women are tired of being over sexualized. We’re mad that over and over again, throughout our lives, we women see the female body objectified instead of honored… and often for profit.
My degree and decades of experience in communications and public relations leads me to believe that Novig wanted this ad to do precisely what it did– harness some backlash and, as a result, be shoved into the spotlight. Most of us had probably never heard of this company before and now we’ve all seen the ad or Googled it to find out what all the fuss is about. It is ragebait and it’s working. Ethics aside, the ad is effective. However, as a Christian mom of three young girls, I’m frustrated that any company feels the need to exploit a woman’s body for attention and sales. I’ve been cheering on every social media response post and video I’ve seen with female athletes showcasing how strong, fast, hardworking, disciplined and talented they are. Instead of allowing young women to believe the narrative that their bodies can be objectified by culture, there are several narratives that have arisen out of this backlash that are rewriting that script for young women. Here are a few worth highlighting What If We Stopped Talking About the Ad? by Miracle in the Mess The Best Counter-Advertisement to the Sydney Sweeney Ad Isn’t What You Think It Is Read on Substack
