The Power of Small Beginnings: Resetting Your Rhythms For Fall

School drop offs are back and I feel like we’re perpetually late. No matter how quick we move in the morning, we always seem to be five minutes behind. Anyone else? There’s something about fall where the pace of life feels… faster.
 
As I was cleaning my house Friday, I dug into the back of storage to pull out our fall decor and began to transform our home into an autumn oasis. It’s funny how quickly one season can close and another opens. The time shift seems to happen almost overnight.

While things get busier in the fall, we can choose to push back against the pace. The change in seasons is pushing us into a new rhythm whether we like it or not. We can allow that crisp fall breeze to usher in an intentional reset that will enable us to get on top of our lives instead or we can be behind the ball as we roll headfirst into school, sports, and eventually the holidays ahead.

“Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.”
— Lamentations 3:22-23


Fall is a season of change. It brings to my mind that, as Lamentations 3:22-23 states, God’s daily mercies invite us to begin again — spiritually, emotionally, and practically. Just like the leaves fall from the trees, we get to shed our sin and shame… and also what just isn’t working for us in this new season.

Reset Your Spiritual Rhythms 

September is a great month to:
  • Count the fruit in our lives (What all has God done so far this year?)
  • Shed our sin and shame (What is weighing us down from living the life we’re called to in this season?) 
  • Determine what is working and what isn’t (What practices can we put into place to accomplish our goals?)

Here are a few super practical ways we can reset our spiritual rhythms this fall:

1. Create a Prayer Practice

If you have the time, grab 10-15 minutes each morning to read a devotional book or a Psalm in your Bible. If not, no sweat. Try praying for just a few minutes as you’re making your coffee or brushing your teeth. Listen to worship music on the way to drop off your kids at school. Play the Miracle in the Mess Podcast while you’re working out, cleaning the house, or changing a diaper. Discover what works for you and stick it out these next few months. Don’t worry, you can reevaluate again come winter.

2. Try Journaling

Writing is my favorite life rhythm because it helps me get face to face with my thoughts and prayers. Some days I bullet point my reflections, other days I write entire entries. Journaling can look like anything that works for you, and it may take you a moment to figure that out. A few prompts to get you started—  “What fun things can I put on my fall bucket list?”“Where am I sensing God’s nudges as I’m heading into a new season personally and for my family/business/community?” “What do I need to release to make space for God to move in the upcoming months?”

3. Begin a Sabbath Ritual

For a quick but deep dive into this subject, check out our past blog and podcast “How Do We Sabbath in a Busy World?” We can begin a Sabbath ritual by committing to one day to rest, unplug, and do things that bring us life for the next three months. Enjoy the work that you’ve done and allow God to spin the world without you for a day.

Quick Tip: Choose Progress Over Perfection

One of my favorite verses has always been Zechariah 4:10 which says:

”Do not despise these small beginnings, for the LORD rejoices to see the work begin…”

God is happy with a slight shift in our lives toward anything that makes us healthier body, mind and soul. The pressure is off to totally overhaul your schedule. Just like summer slowly fades to fall, we too can, day-by-day, allow our rhythms to be transformed. God is okay with the time it takes (He has eternity after all) and delights in any tiny step in the right direction. Just begin.

Small Biblically-based spiritual shifts may look like:
  • Starting with Sabbathing for just an hour and build up over time
  • Writing a gratitude list by thinking of just one new thing every day
  • Say three word prayers like “Lord, help me.” “God, guide me.” “Jesus, show me.” As you feel led, tack on more words and dive deeper into your conversation with God.

This all sounds great, right? But a “Fall Reset” is easy to talk about and not so easy to implement. There’s so much going on! That’s why I created a simple Fall Reset Checklist to help you (and me) get started setting rhythms for the season. It’s a gentle guide filled with prayer prompts, journaling starters, and practical ideas for creating space to breathe.

Fall is a season of change, of letting go, but it’s also a season of fresh starts. God’s mercies meet us each morning — we just have to slow down long enough to receive them. Whatever small beginning you choose today, know that it matters.
