Open Door, Open Heart: Finding Unity at the Table

News feeds are full of fighting. Families are already split over politics, and group text threads are heavy with tension about who to avoid at upcoming holiday gatherings. Even in our neighborhoods, where we once waved and said, “Hey Bob, how are ya?”—now we avert our eyes, hurry to our cars, and escape into the next thing.

Across America, people are dodging personal connection out of fear of conflict—yet at the same time, we dash to our phones to fire off opinionated comments at strangers on social media.
In a world pulling apart, what if the Church led the way in pulling chairs closer?

Remembering Connection

Before ScreensBefore social media, I had to ask my parents or friends about everything. By the time dial-up internet connected, I could’ve already gotten an answer from my mom and hopped on my bike for a neighborhood ride. When my perspective was off, someone who loved me corrected me and steered me straight.

Now, we carry lightning-fast computers in our pockets. Any question, any opinion—seconds away. Then we curate feeds that echo back what we already believe. Before long, we’ve built an entire worldview reinforced not by people who know us, but by algorithms.

And here’s the problem…
When we lack personal connection, we also lack empathy.

The Solution? Proximity.

We need fewer hours behind screens and more hours at tables— tables with friends, family, and even strangers who see the world differently than we do.

Romans 12:13 tells us plainly: “Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality.”

Jesus modeled this. Much of His ministry unfolded at tables—with tax collectors, sinners, the overlooked, and the outcast. He didn’t endorse their choices, but He loved them, broke bread with them, and offered truth in a way they could grasp.

At Jesus’ table, everyone had a seat. And when we open ours, we reflect His heart.

The Radical Simplicity of Hospitality

Here’s the deal: no matter what we believe or how we vote, we all share one thing—our humanity. We are hungry hearts longing for connection and in need of grace.
So, what if we put down our phones and pulled up some chairs? What if hospitality is how the Church quietly, radically heals a divided nation?

It doesn’t have to be complicated. Start with what you have. Invite some friends—or even neighbors you’ve never shared a meal with—into your home.

Here are three easy fall menus to make it doable:
  • Chili & Cornbread
Toss chili in the crockpot, grab a box of cornbread mix—or skip the oven and serve tortilla chips. It’s low stress and feeds a crowd.
  • Taco Night
Provide the meat and tortillas, then ask guests to bring their favorite toppings. Interactive, fun, and everyone gets exactly what they want.
  • Spaghetti & Garlic Bread
Comfort food at its best. Keep it simple with a jar of sauce and boxed pasta, or go big with homemade touches. Either way, it’s affordable and crowd-pleasing.

A Challenge for This Week

Open your door. Invite a few people over—for dinner, dessert, or even just coffee. Ask God to soften your heart as you create space for listening.

Our homes and tables aren’t just for living—they’re for reconciliation.
In a divided America, unity may not start in Washington.
It just might start at your dinner table.

One-Minute Reflection:

Pause (15 seconds):
Take a deep breath. Picture your dining table. Who has sat there lately? Who hasn’t been invited yet?

Reflect (30 seconds):
  • Where in my life am I avoiding connection?
  • How might God be nudging me to “pull the chair closer”?
  • Who is one person I can invite to the table this week—friend, neighbor, or even someone who thinks differently than I do?

Pray (15 seconds):
“Lord, soften my heart. Help me open my door and my table in love. Use my home to reflect Your welcome and bring unity where there’s division.”
