Only A Few Inches From Freedom

Yesterday I watched a hummingbird spend nearly an hour trying to escape a prison it didn’t realize it was helping create.

It was stuck in our garage.

Though it’s a common occurrence, it’s never not sad to see something so beautiful become trapped.

As the bystander, you can so clearly see that all the hummingbird has to do is fly just a few inches lower to be set free. Yet the only thing it knows to do is look up.

Where the sky should be, there’s a ceiling.
Where wide-open spaces should exist, there are walls.

Staring at that hummingbird flitting frantically about, I couldn’t help but wonder if God looks at us like that sometimes. Does He lovingly watch us in the habits and sins and worries and doubts and fears that box us in and think…
