When Contentment in Marriage & Motherhood Seems Impossible: Peace in the Unfinished, Uncomfortable and Unsatisfying

“I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances.”
-Philippians 4:11, NIV

“I have learned to be content in all things...” Hahaha! Just kidding. I have not learned this.

I always want more out of life. Not in a materialistic way, but in a I-want-to-drink-in-life-from-a-fire-hose kind of way. I’m constantly wondering if the grass is greener on the other side, trying to plan what's next on the schedule for my kids, dreaming about the future, and striving to achieve. What I’m really asking is, can I have my cake, my family’s cake, some other cake samples, and eat it too?

However, what Paul is sharing in Philippians 4 is the key to contentment that I think most of us are missing.
After all his life experience, Paul lands on, "I can do all this through Christ who gives me strength (Philippians 4:13)."

The “this” he is referring to is contentment. We can't be content on our own. We can't be enlightened to it. We can't just wake up one day and go, "Wow, I'm so perfectly fine with everything that isn't fine in my life." We can't be content without Christ.

We’re really doing contentment all wrong. We’re forcing ourselves to appreciate what we have when we can be grateful that God thought to give it to us. We’re trying to be satisfied with life as it is but really we need to be ok with what it isn’t. The issues, anger, hurt, and pain may not be fulfilling but they’re fulfilling God’s purpose for us.

Everything in life doesn’t have to be satisfying to be sanctifying.

While we may be weak when it comes to wanting more from life, we can be strong in the God who wants the most for our lives. We can be totally dissatisfied with a place and space and yet completely content with Christ.

Journaling Prompt

Where in your life are you constantly searching for “more”? More certainty, more fulfillment, more progress, more control, more peace? Write honestly about the places where discontentment keeps pulling at your heart. Then ask yourself: What would it look like to stop striving for satisfaction in circumstances and start resting in Christ within them?

Reflection Questions

  1. What situation in your life currently feels the hardest to accept or be content within?
  2. Do you tend to believe contentment comes when circumstances improve? Why?
  3. What does it mean to you that Paul learned contentment through Christ rather than through comfort?
  4. What would change if you believed that life does not have to feel fulfilling in order for God to still be doing something meaningful in it?
  5. What is one practical way you can seek Christ instead of control this week?

Prayer

Jesus,

If I’m honest, contentment feels hard for me. My heart is constantly searching for what’s next, what’s missing, or what could be better. I want answers, clarity, growth, relief, and resolution. I want life to feel settled and satisfying.

But You never promised me a life without longing. You promised me Your presence within it.

Teach me what real contentment looks like—not pretending everything is okay, not settling, not silencing my desires—but learning to trust You in the middle of unmet expectations and unfinished stories.

Help me stop measuring peace by my circumstances. Remind me that I can feel weak, uncertain, and dissatisfied with parts of life while still being fully held by You.

When I am tempted to chase control, teach me surrender.
When I am tempted to compare, teach me gratitude.
When I am tempted to believe I need “more” to be okay, remind me that You are enough.

Thank You for being a God who wastes nothing—not even the hard seasons. Use every ache, delay, disappointment, and unanswered prayer to draw me closer to You and shape me into who You created me to be.

I may not feel content in everything, but I want to learn to be content in You.

Amen.
