Living Fully in the Last Quarter: Finishing the Year Well

It’s hard to believe, but we’re already in the final stretch of the year. I saw a sign the other day: “100 days until Christmas.” At first, I laughed. Surely that can’t be right. But the truth is, the fourth quarter is here whether we’re ready or not. Before long, the Christmas tree Amazon is already trying to sell me will be standing in my living room.

But if I’m honest, this year doesn’t feel cheerful. Our nation has been rocked by tragedy—school shootings, random acts of violence close to home, and most recently, the assassination of conservative Christian activist Charlie Kirk. Social media is buzzing with outrage, opinions, and hostility. The heaviness is exhausting. If you’ve found yourself scrolling rabbit holes like I have, maybe you feel it too: weary, paralyzed, and a little hopeless.

Here’s the good news…
…the last months of the year don’t have to end in despair. We can choose a different posture. We can finish with faith, with love, and with light.

“Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.”
— Philippians 3:13–14

Paul wrote these words from prison. His outlook was grim, yet his heart was full of hope. He reminded the church at Philippi—and us—to keep the main thing (Jesus) the main thing. That’s how we finish well.

Creating a Faithful Finish List

Instead of letting the chaos distract us, what if we wrote a Faithful Finish List? Not a to-do list. Not a set of unrealistic resolutions. But a way to cut through the noise, lay aside distractions, and focus on what matters most to God, to our families, and to our communities.

Here’s what’s on my list:
  • Less time scrolling, more time in real conversations, in Scripture, and in prayer. When I’m online, I want to contribute—not just consume.
  • Loosen my grip on a full schedule. Leave space for margin. Trust God to bring the opportunities worth saying yesto.
  • Daily rhythms of reading my Bible or a devotional.
  • Praying for lost friends to know Jesus, for revival and healing in our nation, and for God’s blessing on our work.
  • Consistency in date nights with my husband—and speech that is life-giving and sweet in my home.

Questions for Your Own Faithful Finish
  • What is an unrealistic expectation you’re placing on yourself or others? How can you release it or break it into smaller steps?
  • What is one realistic goal you’d like to reach before the year ends? What would it take to get there?
  • What distractions are keeping you from God’s best for your life and family? How can you cut them back?
  • What specific prayers will you commit to in these next 100 days?

Finishing
the Year Strong

Remember: this isn’t about doing more. A Faithful Finish List helps us let go of the unnecessary and zero in on what God has truly called us to. It’s about finishing with intentionality, hope, and light in a world that feels dark.

“Live as children of light” (Eph. 5:8).

That’s our call. Shine bright. Stay faithful. And let’s finish this year strong.
