 We assume that because it’s tough God isn’t in it. Because this time is dark and painful, it must be Satan. It’s a consequence. A burden. A pain. But the Bible calls Jesus a man of sorrows. Well aquatinted with grief and pain and rejection. (Isaiah 53:3) Over 2,000 years ago he was unjustly put on trial for crimes he didn’t do. Undeservingly beaten for a law he never broke. And unashamedly hung on a cross for sins he hadn’t committed. The result of living in a broken world is that bad things happen. The good news of the cross, tomb and resurrection day, is this: Jesus was broken for our brokenness. While this may be the hardest thing we ever walked through, darkest night, or most painful situation, we worship a God who not only understands but is well acquainted with our sorrow. Rejection. Death. We can endure bad, hard things because our Jesus overcame the world with Satan’s best attempt at defeating it. The worst moment became the best thing to ever happen in history. C.S. Lewis put it this way, “God whispers to us in our pleasures, speaks in our conscience, but shouts in our pains.” God is often doing his best work in our worst circumstances. He is the loudest in the hardest problems. He is closest in our deepest pain. Don’t complain so much that you miss the intimacy of the cross. The closeness of Jesus shouting, “You’re going to make it because I’ve already make it. You’re going to overcome because look at all I overcame. You’re totally accepted because I was rejected, adopted because I was cast out and free because I paid it all.” Your life can begin because, as Jesus said on the cross in John 19:30, “It is finished.”
