Between watching The Death of a Pastors Wife, hearing too much about the Lindsay Clancy Case, and the anniversaries of both the assassination of Charlie Kirk and 9/11, this week has felt and continues to feel incredibly dark.
Death, destruction, pain and grief litter the headlines of our country and have sparked harsh debates throughout Christian communities. Social media looks like a battle ground. It makes sense to just want to give up. Log off. Cuddle up on the couch with a blanket and cup of coffee and not emerge until something good happens (this would be my personal go-to). We’re asking: How can we really be a light with so much darkness? What difference can we even make amongst so much defeat?
As I have been pondering and praying, the Lord has reminded me of His instruction to His people (Israel) while they were in Babylonian captivity in Jeremiah 29. False prophets had given Israel what they typically offer, a false hope. They claimed that their exile would only last a few years. God’s people would be exiled for not 7 months… not 7 years… but 70 years.
The straight-shooter in me appreciates that Jeremiah didn’t sugar coat this for Israel. He bluntly told them that God isn’t bringing them home for a hot minute so they really need to shift their mindset from waiting for freedom to come to them to determinatively cultivating hope in hardship. Here’s the truth for us in this as well– America seems held captive by darkness and we have a decision to make. We can keep waiting around for freedom. We can stay paralyzed by the pain. Or we can...
